What is a MOO?
MOOs are a way of talking to people on the internet by typing. What you type is shown almost immediately to both you AND all the other people connected to the same MOO at the same time. You can have a conversation almost as fast as talking (depending on how faast you can type and think of course!) Most MOOs are all in writing, unlike the WWW with lots of pictures.

Some MOOs are set up for special purposes, such as language teaching. Two such MOOs are saMOOrai, an EFL MOO in Japan, and schMOOze University, an EFL/ESL MOO in New York City.

How do I connect to a MOO?
Like finding a website, you have to go to a MOO site before you can connect. Some of them have a link from a web page which you can click, like the ones below here. This will open a new program, called Telnet (almost all computers have a Telnet program on them already). The web page you were on before is still there, just behind the Telnet window.

Just about all MOOs have the same method for connecting. When you see the login screen (often a graphic made by using keyboard characters) you type

connect guest

and press the return or enter key. It will tell you what to do next, but you will need to read carefully.

Connect directly to saMOOrai <-- Click on this link and a Telnet window will open. Your browser window will stay open behind it.

Use saMOOrai for our first meeting of the NLT teachers project.

To get more information about this MOO, go to:

http://samoorai.hyper.chubu.ac.jp:8080. On this page there are links to download software to make your MOOing more comfortable.

http://schmooze.hunter.cuny.edu/test.html <-- Click on this link to connect to schMOOze University. If your web browser can handle Java programs, you MOO directly off a web page here. (If you don't know what that means, just try it and see.) Otherwise.....

Connect directly to schMOOze University using Telnet.

We will use this one more later to meet other teachers and participate in NETEACH sessions.
