Content and Methodology

The project began in 1998, with four teachers from cummunity learning centres in the Carlton/Fitzroy ACFE sub-region. They met regularly with the project co-ordinator and project mentor.

The research component of project is based on a cyclic model, where teachers meet on a regular basis to share experiences, observations and reflections, and to get training in various aspects of computer use and the internet.

Teachers in the project regularly communicate through email, phone, face-to-face and online forums such as a WWWboard and MOOing ('chat') at schMOOze University, a virtual ESL/EFL campus.

Classroom Practice
Teachers have then applied their knowledge and skills in the classroom in various ways, depending on the needs of the learner groups. Examples of activities include

  • familiarisation with hardware
  • familiarisation with the concept of the internet
  • word processing
  • graphics/scanning
  • setting up and using web-based email accounts
  • finding information from the web on topics of interest
  • downloading documents, images and programs
  • preparing publications, newsletters
  • using CD-ROM learning materials
Reflective Journal Writing
Each teacher has been keeping a reflective journal, in which they have recorded observations on their own learning processes and those of the students. These reflections have been a valuable means of formulating thoughts and plans to move on to a further stage.
