Bamburgh on schMOOze

Bamburgh

You are in a small, Northumbrian *village* dominated by the huge, red sandstone edifice of *Bamburgh Castle*.

Opposite the shops, on the other side of the village green, is a Victorian *church*, standing on a windswept headland.

The church and castle are separated by a row of houses built in the same red sandstone as the castle. Between the houses and the cricket pitch there is a narrow opening, *The Wynding*, which leads to the *beach*, from where there is a very good view of the *Farne Islands*.

If you look very carefully, you can see a narrow alleyway beside the *Copper Kettle Tearooms*.

You can go to Lindisfarne via the *Causeway* (type CAUSEWAY, NORTH, or N).

You can go to the Cottage via the *Alley*(type ALLEY, SOUTH, S).

LOOK VILLAGE
The village comprises a few streets of stone cottages, a general store and post office, a delicatessan, a cafe and several hotels.

LOOK BAMBURGH CASTLE
You walk up a steep hill, pausing every now and then to catch your breath. Passing through the main gateway to the castle, you look up to see the portcullis above you. You climb onto the ramparts, gaze out to sea and then turn to see the magnificent building which is Bamburgh Castle This castle has incredible views to the east across to the Farne Islands, and to the north to Lindisfarne Castle. It is made of red sandstone, and despite many later additions, there has been a castle here since the time of legends - it is here, for example, that Lancelot brought Guinevere when they fled the wrath of King Arthur and it is here that Childe Roland was transformed into the Laidley Worm by his wicked stepmother... The sun shines on the battlements, and across the cricket pitch at the bottom of the ivy-covered western walls you can see the sleepy village of Bamburgh itself.

LOOK CHURCH
The Victorian church stands on a windswept headland. It is an ugly building, and yet it is visited by many tourists - its one claim to fame being that the heroine *Grace Darling* is buried in the churchyard.
