Greece

Like Italy, Greece is a large European peninsula, jutting southwards into the Mediterranean Sea. But ut is less tha half the area of Italy. It's population is less than 20% of Italy's and considerably less than Australia's. Apart from the mainland, Greece includes many islands, such as Corfu and Levkas in the Ionian Sea; Andros, Khios and Naxos in the Aegean Sea; and Crete, the largest Greek island.

Greece became a kingdom in 1830 and a republic in 1967. The idea of democracy began in Greece about 2,500 years ago. It has spread to many parts if the world. The ancient city of Athend is the capital city.

Much of Greece is mountainous. It is often cold and dry in the mountains, but along the coast the climate is very hot.
