Fiji

Fiji is made up of twolarge islands, Viti Levu (the larger of the two) abd Vanua Levu, and about 320 smaller islands. About 106 of these islands are inhabited. The total area is just over 18,000 square kilometers. Fiji is about 1'420 the size of Australia.

Fiji lies in the South Pacific Ocean, 2,100 kilometers north of New Zealand. The larger islands are of volcanic origin; most of the smaller ones are parts of coral reefs. The climate is generally hot and wet, but there are many variations.

Fiji became an independent nation within the British Commonwealth in 1970. The capital city is Suva, on the south-east coast of Viti Levu. The population is less than a million, consisting mainly of native Fijians (Melanesian) and Indians (most of them descended from those who came to Fiji in the late Nineteenth Century), as well as several thousand Europeans, Chinese and others.
