China
In area, China is one of the largest countries in the world. Its population - more than 1,000,000,000 - is higher than any other country. China is about 5,000 kilometers from east to weest and 5,500 kilometers from north to south. Mountains cover about a third of the country. Great rivers such as the Huang Ho (or Yellow River) and the Yangtze flow across the vast land from west to east. The climate is varied. A small portion of southern China (including Hong Kong) lies within the tropical zone. The capital, Beijing, is in the north, at a latitude of about 40 degrees, roughly the same as central Greece. The Communists under the leadership of Mao Tsetung gained control of China in 1949 and it was proclaimed the People's Republic of China.
