Carlton Primary School has been educating students since 1869. Originally established in Faraday Street (see photo here) , the school was relocated to its current site in 1973. Built in the Modernist style, the current Carlton Primary School is an example of Brutalist architecture, which was popular in Britain, Europe and Australia in the 1960s and 1970s. Whilst the school presents a severe façade – especially from the Rathdowne Street perspective - the interior is light filled and spacious, making the classrooms conducive to effective and enjoyable learning experiences

Carlton Primary is located on large grounds running between Rathdowne Street and Drummond Street. During break times, the students can be found sitting on the beautiful red gum chairs and tables under tall eucalypt trees, playing on the newly surfaced basketball court, having a game of soccer on the oval, monitoring the progress of the kitchen garden – or checking to see if eggs have been laid. Younger children enjoy the enclosed courtyard area, complete with rainforest and large sandpit.

Carlton Primary has built up a staff that is enthusiastic, engaged, and committed. Teachers have a range of skills from which the children are able to benefit. Specialist subjects include art, music, environmental education, PE, cultural studies, library and a swimming program, with ICT (computers) integrated in to every learning utilising our roving laptops. There are new computers in every classroom, and these are integrated into daily learning. Classroom learning experiences are supported by a range of educational excursions, and we are lucky to be located a short distance from some great learning facilities such as CERES Environment Park, and the Melbourne Museum.

Small class size are a priority at Carlton Primary. Children are able to receive valuable teacher attention in classes of fewer than 20 students. In the large, bright classrooms students become engaged learners through enquiry based learning, where children’s interests are used as a starting point for learning. A typical school day will include a range of learning experiences – hands on play and project work, group and personal reflection, as well as explicit instruction. The enquiry based learning complements the Victorian Essential Learning Standards that are taught across the state.

Students are able to have one on one time with their teacher, and students who require additional support are able to gain access to the reading recovery program or the literacy support program. Those children requiring extension are provided with opportunities to excel, through daily classroom experiences as well as with our specialist teachers in areas of art and music.

Carlton Primary has a curriculum guided by the Victorian Essential Learning Standards, with an additional strong focus on Environmental Education, and on literacy. The school curriculum also boasts a stunning art program, [See our online art gallery here], sporting clinics, music, swimming intensives, environmential education, and participation in the ADVANCE program at University High School – all with the benefits of small class sizes, and individual attention.

Carlton Primary School is committed to implementing the Blueprint initiatives including the Victorian Essential Learning Standards, the Principles of Learning and Teaching, Teacher Professional Learning and the new school Performance and Development Culture. The New Student Report Cards were introduced at Carlton Primary School during 2007.
