The rainforest garden at Carlton Primary School is a work in progress at the school. The year 5 and 6 students came up with the idea of developing a rainforest at the school after visiting the Forest Gallery at the Melbourne Museum.
The students suggested developing the large central courtyard or light-well that is located in the centre of the school building into a rainforest, as the space reminded them of the rainforest at the museum. Prior to planting the site had to be cleared of ivy and other weeds. The students then identified flora of Victoria’s mountain forests, using information supplied by the museum. Next plants were sourced and planted out. The plants are currently being labelled, including the few remaining ‘weed’ species which have been left to help show their effect on an ecosystem. |
Due to the ongoing drought and water restrictions, the rainforest has not flourished to the extent that was expected and some further planting is required. However recently we were successful in gaining a grant from the Commonwealth Government under the Green Vouchers for Schools Programme that will enable us to install a 10,800 litre water tank to capture rain water from the school roof and use in our rainforest garden. |
