Ripples of Justice

Timor Links

An initiative of the Australian Jesuits to provide both material and an index on social issues from a Christian perspective, on the internet in Australia.

The Timor Links page was begun during the 1999 crisis in East Timor to link to organisations, especially Christian based ones, who provided current information or were trying to bring peace and aid to the territory.

Though this page has been extensively revised and updated, pages and sites that date from the 1999 crisis have been retained. These will often be found in their category below a horizontal rule.

This page, and the 'Eyewitness' page, will be updated from time to time, continuing a special interest of the Cardoner website since its beginning in 1995.

"To Resist Is To Win", Xanana's Gusmao's autobiography with additional material has been published by Jesuit Publications; the xananagusmao.com website has information about Xanana and the book.

Suggestions, information and links can be forwarded via the "Timor - Submitting info page" page or by emailing us.

Update

The crisis is now one of urgently rebuilding a country! There is also continuing concern about the refugees in West Timor: for example, check out the information from Jesuit Refugee Service.

Where to from here?

The most important matters are to bring food and medical aid to those in need, and hence to offer donations of money and supplies to agencies, especially those with established presences in Timor.

What has been learnt?

We need to reflect on how this tragedy came to be, and campaign strongly to ensure that such tragedies are prevented rather than need to be cured. (... to be continued)
