'Contacts for Australian action' has been provided during the crisis in East Timor to generate and provide a list of contacts that Australians, especially friends of the Jesuits, can use to work for peace in the territory.
As well as keeping the east timorese and peter [hosking sj] in our prayers can we take some sort of concerted action through our networks?
In the first instance what about a letter/phone/fax/email campaign animating our variety of networks?
Members of Federal and State Parliament, the UN Security Council and the Indonesian Ambassador would be good first ports of call.
Below are some further addresses i've prepared for use in the school here [Athelstone, South Australia]. Hope these are of some assistance.
There are of course many other companies that can be targeted, this is just a quick selection.
Some questions could include -
Have these companies expressed their concern over events in East Timor?
Have they sought co-operation from their Indonesian financial partners in
questioning/condemning the role of the military in East Timor?
How have they sought to convince their Australian shareholders that they
are working for peace in East Timor?
Let's keep each other posted on marches and so on. prayers, jeremy.
Obviously the Federal Cabinet and the United Nations are prime focal points for any letter/fax/email campaigns about East Timor, but the following may be of assistance as well. All these companies and corporations have dealings with Indonesia, in some cases at quite significant levels.
