Beaconsfield Flora and Fauna Reserve is a
special place ...
We can ALL help care for it!
*Garden plants going bush...
Most of the weeds in BFFR started out as garden plants. They are
spread into the reserve by seed carried by birds, wind or water, or in
dumped garden rubbish.
- Dispose of garden waste responsibly, eg. Compost!
- Avoid growing plants that are known weeds.
- Consider native plants - they will attract wildlife, need less
water and add beauty to your garden.
*Where is your cat right now?
Cats are great pets. Unfortunately roaming cats kill millions of
native animals each year.
- Ensure your cat wears a bell on its collar
- Keep your cat safe indoors, or even construct an enclosed play
area outside with toys and areas to sunbake!
*Be Waste wise!
Each year on Clean Up Australia Day, tonnes of rubbish is
collected from BFFR and Cardinia Creek. Reduce this by:
- Pick up any litter you see around you at home, on walks.
- Dispose of your wastes appropriately in bins, compost etc
- Take garden prunings to the tip to be mulched.
*Logs have life inside!!!
Native bush can sometimes look 'messy'. However the logs, leaf
litter, and ground plants are home for a variety of animals.
- Leave fallen timber on the ground in bushland areas.
- Purchase your firewood from a reputable source rather than
collecting your own in the bush.
- Always walk on tracks provided to avoid disturbing wildlife
habitat
*Drains to the Bay...
Our local stormwater drains carry water to the Cardinia Creek. The
Creek eventually flows into Westernport Bay, home to internationally
significant wetland areas, popular fishing spots and Phillip Island. By
protecting water quality at home, we are protecting the bay for us all to
enjoy!
- Make sure that clean water is the only thing entering stormwater
drains! The gutter is not a garbage bin!!
- Avoid using harsh chemicals, use minimal lawn fertiliser.
*Leave only footprints.
People visit the reserve every day of the year to walk, ride bikes and
enjoy nature. We need to make sure we are responsible visitors to keep the
reserve healthy for everyone to enjoy.
- Ensure that you keep to the defined tracks. Trampling vegetation
destroys habitat.
- Motorbikes cause track erosion and are a danger to other visitors.
They are banned from being ridden in BFFR.
- Horses also contribute to track erosion, spread weeds in their
manure and can be a danger to other users. Horses are permitted to use the
track from the carpark opposite Holm Park Road to the Cardinia Creek AT
WALKING PACE ONLY. This is to provide access to Akoonah Park.
Manure must be removed by riders using this track. Horses are not
permitted on any other track in BFFR.
*Become a bushland Friend!
The Friends of Cardinia Creek Sanctuary work in the BFFR to conserve
wildlife habitat and care for the areas that people can visit. You can
help in this important work. Being a Friend is a great way to learn more
about our local environment, make new friends and 'do your bit' for our
community.
