THE ANNUAL DEADLIFT CHALLENGE 2001
8th December
St Kilda, Victoria

By Barry Murray

The Annual Deadlift Challenge has returned to St Kilda. The ever-popular powerlifting event is to be held at the St Kilda hotel on Saturday the 8th of December. The lifters travel from far and wide to compete in this relatively new event. This is powerlifting at its best electric, fast, exciting and to some amazing, an absolute spectators delight. Australia's best will be there with representatives coming from all states even the Darwin team are heading down for the opportunity to get out on stage and show their stuff...and that they will. The deadlift is a test of brute strength you just get on the stage and lift as much as you possibly can. It is not weightlifting all you have to do is lift the weight to your knees, so some incredible lifts will be seen.

The first deadlift challenge was held at the Duke of Edinburgh in 1993 when Adam Coe Australia's strongest powerlifter of all time broke the record with an amazing 355kg there were only seven competitors but it was so popular it has now become an annual event with between forty and fifty competitors each year.

Adam's record still stands and I am sure that there is an eager contender out there preparing to better it. Adam has now retired but he is coming all they way from Perth to assist with the running of the event.

Just because it is a strength sport don't discount the females they are the most competitive of all. At least two world record holders, Corral Quinell from Darwin and Taylor young "The Powerhouse" from Albury will be giving some of the males a run for their money. Taylor holds the record at 212.5kg at 67.5kg bodyweight some awesome lifting. I wonder if she will go for the big 220. Sharon waters our local strongwoman ..........("you finish this")

Derrick Boyer the 150kg world ranked strongman is also coming down from Albury to put on a show. Huge men huge weights they make them strong in Albury Laurie Butler another world record holder is also on his way down to defend his title after winning last year with 325kg. An amazing effort for this now 54 year old man. Yes - male and female, young and old, tall and short, wide and thin - you can't predict the winner and it is just unreal to watch so just be there!!! You will leave wanting more and it is all for free.
