CAPO 2005 Pro Bench Competition
John Batman Theatre Melbourne Convention Centre, Victoria, 20/03/05

By Barry Murray, CAPO President

Well, the Pro-bench show 2005 certainly went off with a bang this year with the biggest crowd turn out yet. A lot of red lights and contention but the big benchers sure put on a show. It was just electric, a fantastic venue and some awesome lifting to provide a spectators delight and add to the atmosphere of the biggest bodybuilding show of all time.

It would seem that a 200kg legal bench will put you in the running at any bench comp in Australia. The 200kg qualifier wasn’t a problem, but getting the lifters to the platform and completing a successful lift was? Nine entries only 2 weeks prior and only four made it on the day. I do hope those who pulled out with injury recover fully but it does go to show how high the standard is to just be in the running for one of our most prestigious events.

200kg was the starting weight and Shane Stringer from Darwin, weighing 100kg, got off to a good start with three white lights. Warren Rozen weighing in at 110kg found the weight no problem but was bombed for belly pressing. After clarifying with the referees Warren continued to 210kg but to no avail - the referees were sticking to their guns. Shane came back with a strong 210kg and hit the lead for a few minutes at least. With $2000 up for grabs “Mr Bench Press” Ange Galati showed his superior ability to focus and lock one in no matter what. Ange, only weighing 77.7kg, was entering new territory wearing a new Metal suit. He opened with an amazing 230kg, almost treble bodyweight and 20kg above any other opener he has done before. After injuring his wrist in a confusing spotter error lift-off mishap, and to the amazement of all, he missed his 1st attempt. Aching wrist and all he was never phased and showed his strength and determination on the 2nd by just blowing it away. Warren continued with 227.5kg, getting it up, but was red lighted yet once again. Ange gave 240kg a good shake but with so many set backs on the day he just missed it twice. Oh so close!
Big Shaun Bostock didn’t hit the groove on the day but oh boy he had the crowd in. 240kg on his opener but he wasn’t able to hit his chest. More weight was required so 260? But still no. Shaun then took two gallant attempts at 275kg (yes 600lb!) and almost pulled it off - oh what a strong man. Looks like 600lb will be in the bag for Shaun in the near future.

Many thanks must go out to those involved in the production of this 1st class show. Firstly Tony Doherty who not only provides the major sponsorship but for allowing us to be a part of this huge event. A special thanks to Max’s who provided sponsorship to the runners up and have provided support to all CAPO events for the past ten years, it is MUCH appreciated. To all of the CAPO workers involved: Chief Referee Michael Smyth, side refs Geoff Barclay and Ken Fiske, o ur MC Mr Ian Webb, on the officials table Mrs Wendy Colliver and our beautiful score lady Miss Tegan Colliver. Thanks also to our spotter loaders Cameron Lindley, James Graham, Gerard Gaud, Sam Kolasinac and step in lift off Paul Frange, Mr Mike Brittain and Dave from Doherty’s for organizing the weights and benches and another special thanks to Mr Derek Bevins who worked tirelessly all day dragging weights all around Melbourne.
