CAPO 2003 Victorian State Titles
Mildura, Vic

By Ian Webb

MILDURA MAGIC

This year the state titles were held in Mildura. Vince Simonetta organized the event for this year, and did a fantastic job. After a scenic drive, and a night relaxing in preparation for the big day, 15 competitors took to the platform in 1 flight. The competitors ranged in age and weight, from 18 to 70 and 48kgs to 112kgs. Powerlifting is a sport for everyone. Big or Small. Young or Oldish. It doesn't matter.

John Miller, the oldest competitor at a young 70 squatted first and did an easy 25kgs. He was saving himself for a bid Bench later on. Tegan was the first on the platform and the only female for the day. She opened with an easy 85kg, then went onto squat 97.5, 102.5 and successfully squatted a new record of 105kgs. This is more than twice her bodyweight. Baz was going off his nut at this and it was only the first session. Anthony Christodoulou, an up and coming young lifter, was next up and squatted 140 well. Then 147.5 and 155 went up easily as well. Anthony then lined up 163 for a new Australian record for the 18-19yo section. The command was given and down he went, up, up and finally rack was called. The smile on his face summed it all up. Adrian Zalcman, our world champion junior, was next. He went for an easy 150 and then 165kgs. Just a light day for Adrian. Maxi Cornelius squatted a well-earned 205kgs. Ange Gelati was doing a three-lift comp for the first time in a few years. He squatted an easy 205kgs. There was plenty more left there too. Gerard Gaud started with 210, then 220, but just missed 230. Steve Geers, another lifter still green and improving with each comp started with 202.5, then 212.5 and finally a new PB of 220. Big Andrew Butcher and training partner Ken Fiske were next with both starting on 240. Both went onto complete 260 and 257.5 respectively and then both tackled 270kg. Kenny went first and successfully lifted it, but Butch with a slight technical fault missed it. Joe Zollo and protégé Nathan Edwards were next to lift with 265 and 260 respectively. Joey went onto successfully lift 285 and 300kgs and marked his return to lifting in a big way. Pupil Nathan also squatted well lifting 280 and then 290. Ian Webb, the heaviest competitor at 112kgs was next up and started with 275. Then went onto lift 290 and a new PB of 302.5kgs. Chris Brown started with 280 and with his eyes closed did 300. That was it for Chris who was saving himself for the Bench. Vince was the last squatter and opened with a massive 300. Then went onto squat 320 and 340 with ease. Just saving himself for the Nationals in August.

The Bench Press session was next with Tegan leading the way. She started with 47.5 and then 52.5. Tegan had two attempts at 55kgs, but was unable to get it up, even with Baz psyching her up. Anthony started with an easy 80kgs. Then lifted 87.5 and a new PB and record of 90.5. Unfortunately, 96 proved to be too much for him on the day. John Miller was set for a big Bench and opened with 80kg. Then went onto successfully lift 86, 90 and 95kgs. A new record for John. Adrian opened with 90, but that proved to be it for him as 100 was too much for him on his next two attempts. Several good lifts followed with Maxi lifting 120, Gerard and Steve both getting 130,Nathan lifted 150, Kenny 152.5 and Big Joey 160kgs. Vince started with a light 160kgs and then went to 175. Vince then had a go at 180, but couldn't quite get it up. Ian Webb was next on the platform and started with 165. He had successful attempts at 172.5 and 177.5. He couldn't quite manage the big 400lbs of 182.5kgs, getting stuck half way up. Andrew "the arch" Butcher started on 170. Then went to 180 and 185.5 for a new record. He had a crack at 190, but just missed it. Chris Brown who wanted a big Bench started on 187.5. Then 197.5 and finally after about 10seconds of shaking and cheering, 202.5 went up. It was awarded the most determined lift of the day. Great lift Chris. Finally on the Bench, Ange Gelati, who has made this event his own, started with an easy 200. He then went onto lift 210 and 220. He could have done these lifts in his sleep.

The most exciting part of the day, the Deadlift was next. John did an easy 65, and called it a day. He was here for the Bench record and got what he wanted. Well-done John. Tegan started with a missed 100. It was just a technical hitch though, and went onto successfully lift 105, 115 and finally 120. Anthony was next and opened with 150. He then went onto complete 160 and a new PB of 170kgs. A good day for Anthony, with 9 from 9. Adrian started with 170 and then lifted 185.5. He missed his third attempt of 195. Big Maxi was next on stage, smashing his hands on his head to psyche up. He started with 185, then 200 and finally lifted a huge 210kgs. Ange also started with 185. He then went to 205 and finally and easy 225. There was also plenty left in the tank on that one and when he starts to lift to his potential, we will see some of the biggest lifts in Australia on bodyweight. By this time Baz was almost spent. He had a huge day with both Tegan and Ange lifting well and all the screaming seemed to have paid off. Gerard finished the day with a 230 Deadlift, and narrowly missed 250; Steve got 260 and also had 9 successful lifts from 9 attempts. Butch and Kenny both lifted 270, after Kenny missed his first attempt of 240. He got it up, but took a step back. Just a balance problem. Joey started with 255, then got 275, but missed 290 on his last attempt. His pupil started with 280 but missed his next two attempts at 300. Chris started with a light 270, then 295 and finished with an impressive 310. Ian opened with 280, then 295. After a big slap from Kenny, he successfully lifted 307.5 and a new PB. Vince the last lifter of the day opened with 280, then 300 and finally lifted an easy 320kgs.

After all the results were tallied, Vince was the winner with Chris and Adrian, 2nd and 3rd. Joey won the masters division with John Miller 2nd. Nathan Edwards won the junior section with Anthony Christodoulou 2nd. Tegan was the winner of the women's section. There were numerous State and National records broken and many more new PB's. Congratulations to all lifters on an outstanding day.

As always, there are many thank you's to go round. Thanks to the Bodyparts Gym for holding the competition at their fine establishment. Thank you to sponsor Tall Poppy Wines who supplied many of the awards for the winners and ample supplies of the good stuff for later on. Referees for the day were Mike Brittan, Andrea Sterns and Mia Simonetta. You did a great job guys and girls. Also to Wendy Colliver and Yuris Sterns for doing all the scoring, record keeping and MC'ing for the day. Thank you to the spotters for the day, Layne Gunther and Grag Smythe. It's always a tough job to do it all day. Well-done guys. Thanks must also go to all the competitors who traveled to Mildura to make it such a great comp.

In the end, it was a smoothly run competition and all the accolades must go to Vince and Mia Simonetta for doing the hard job of organizing the event. Thank you guys and we'll catch you in Melbourne in August for the National Titles.
