2003 CAPO Nationals - Male Section
Sunday, August 4th, 2003

By Barry Murray

Mr Benchpress, Ange Galati, 80kg from Melbourne starts the male section. He opens with 185kg after doing a huge 220kg bench yesterday it seems like a walk in the park. He walks back and executes a perfect opener. He elects 205kg for his 2nd attempt, concentration plus and away for 3 white lights. He then takes 220kg for his 3rd, drops into it at a Mason Jardine pace but unfortunately doesn't have the squatting experience to pull himself out. A good start to the day for Ange though. Ange goes on to execute an unreal 220kg bench for the 2nd day in a row and finishes the day with a 200kg deadlift giving him a PB total of 625kg. Oh boy watch out if Ange gets serious about the three lift comps.

Adrian Zalcman, also from Victoria, "Mighty Mouse", only 23 years of age and 60kg bodyweight is next onto the platform. He opens the day with a 200kg squat, over treble bodyweight. He follows this with 210kg twice nice and deep, but to no avail. He completes a 122.5kg bench on his second attempt and elects not to take a third. Obviously saving it for the Deadlift which he opens with an easy 185kg remember "treble bodyweight again" then he jumps to 205kg with ease. Adrian then pulls a huge 215.5kg to give him a new Australian record for his collection and 2nd place overall in the 2003 National titles. Go Mighty Mouse!

Bill Harnett, WA, 82kg, 32 years of age, opens with a very deep 200kg for 3 white lights. His 2nd attempt of 220kg also extremely deep and very steady. An awesome squat again. On his 3rd attempt of 235kg Bill drops into it quite fast, like Ange, but he sticks with it and pushes it through for 3 white lights. A great start to the day for Bill, but gloom was lurking around the corner Bill failed on three occasions with his bench of 145kg and unfortunately was not able to continue in the contest.

Shane Stringer, NT, 100kg, another big bencher, unfortunate in yesterdays bench contest though, opens with 200kg in the Dave Smith style. The weight is easy and 2 white lights for Shane. He follows with 215kg looking much steadier on his second, came up strongly but unfortunately just missed it on depth - 2 to 1 red lights - " a wide stance may help Shane". The big bencher from the NT decided to play it safe on the bench and opened with a nice 170kg, he then took 180kg with ease but the jump to that magical 200kg was just a bit much on the day. Shane did a nice 230kg DL to finish the day with a 610 total and third place in the 100kg division.

Gerard Gaud, Vic, 75kg, took a 210kg opener, very cautious on the way down pushes it through for 3 white lights. His 2nd at 220kg only 2.5kg off treble bodyweight. Slow on the descent and somehow also on the way up - YES! 3 white lights. Gerard elects 230kg for his 3rd attempt but to no avail. He then went on to bench 120kg and pull a nice 240kg deadlift to finish the day off.

Damon Hayhow, ex-Victorian but now a Qld contender, a phenomenal junior lifter pulling a 330kg deadlift at 100kg, walks out with a 220kg squat which may as well have been done in the warm up area. He jumps to 235kg, very nicely executed and another 3 white lights. His 3rd attempt on 245kg believe it or not looks as if he is still warming up. He must be saving himself for a big deadlift here today. Damon goes on to bench 140kg and then the battle for 1st place in the 82.5kg class is on Ange now 40kg up in the subtotal with that huge bench of 220. Damon plays it safe with a nice easy opener of 260kg. He then stays in front with a 275kg for his 2nd Ange misses his last 2 attempts on technical errors and Damon takes it out with a comfortable 660kg total and plenty in reserve for next year. Hope to see you then Damon.

Dean Riordan, all the way from WA, 39 years old, a very solid 90kg bodyweight opens with a well-executed 235kg. Dean then takes 250kg down but unfortunately misses it. He comes back on his 3rd with 250kg, walks out strong and pushes it home. Yes, he gets it right this time. 3 white lights for Dean. Dean does on to bench 170kg and pull a huge treble bodyweight 275kg deadlift to give him a 695kg total and 1st place in the 90kg division. Well done Dean great to see new talent coming into the sport with so much potential.

Greg Hills, Albury NSW, 32 years old, opens on 240kg at 75kg bodyweight (treble bodyweight). Quite an easy lift. He elects 252.5kg for his next attempt, steady out but it wasn't there on the day. Greg benched 150kg and finished the day with a big strong 260kg deadlift to give him 1st place in the 75kg division.

Dave "Boxhead" Smith, NT, 90kg, 42 years of age, opens on a conservative 240kg but unfortunately to the crowds dismay he just misses it on depth. Stubborn Dave elects to go up to 250kg for his second, shaking all the way down, keeping the referees alert and even though he fought it out he bombed on depth. In the true Irish manner he elects a third but the damage is already done and Dave buckles in the middle and almost collapses to the floor in a desperate attempt to redeem himself and stay in the contest. A real show of courage and determination but that is it for Dave today. Sad to see Smithy all the way from Darwin not complete the championships. Let's hope that Chris Brown can keep his squats down and Dave can keep Chris in line for 2004.

Brian Jarrot, Albury NSW, 34 years old, 83.4kg, obviously didn't make bodyweight but shows them all how to do it. His first attempt at 245kg, another treble bodyweight squat from Laurie Butler's gym in Albury. He fires up, walks out and blows it away with ease. His 2nd attempt at 255kg is nice and deep, well-executed. What a great squat! His 3rd attempt at 265kg was also a very strong attempt but he just dropped his chest a little on the way up - oh so close. Brian went on to bench 140kg and also pull 260kg just like his training partner Greg. It looks like the 82kg division will be huge next year especially if you make it down next time Brian.

Andrew "Butch" Butcher, Vic, 100kg, 27 years old, opens on 247.5kg - quite an easy squat. He elects 265kg for a 2nd which was a strong squat but unfortunately not deep enough. Not happy with this, Butch elects to go up 2.5kg, obviously a fatal mistake. Andrew made amends in the bench press though with his impressive bench style he executed three excellent lifts finishing with a PB of 190kg and not stopping there Andrew pulled 272.2kg (600lb) for a 710kg total and a well deserved 1st place trophy in the 100kg division.

Warren Rozen, just 24 years of age, also in the 100kg class from Victoria flies out in typical form with 270kg, waits quite some time for a squat call, executes it easily but was red lighted, I believe for not locking his left leg out. He stays on 270kg for his 2nd attempt, walks out again with the same confident form and squats the 270kg pleasing the referees with depth and lockout. A good squat and good choice to not go up in weight, Warren. It's always advisable to get one on the board. Warren now takes a massive 40kg to 310kg but to no avail today. Warren, an extremely determined man, had suffered a very bad pec tear at the pro-bench show this year and managed a 150kg bench followed by a 280kg deadlift enough to consolidate 2nd place in the 100kg division. I am sure we will be seeing a lot more of Warren in the future with some big numbers.

Steve Tye opens the 2nd round with a token squat of 115kg. He is 31 years old from NSW. Steve is obviously here for a big bench today. That he is - he opens with 230kg. Oh boy this young man is strong- it looked like 60kg! yes take the bar to 250kg for his second and three white lights for a new 125kg division Australian record. Steve now elects 272.5kg only 0.5kg off the biggest bench ever in Australia also just off the best bench on ratio held by Ange Galati better watch out Ange, Steve is on your tail.

Big Ken Fiske weighs in at a trim 105.8kg, 34 years old from Vic, starts the day with a nice deep and easy 245kg squat. He takes his 2nd attempt to 265kg, also easy, 3 white lights. A very nice squat, Ken. Ken steps out of his comfort zone, elects 277.5kg - it's very deep, he fights it all the way. It's an absolutely great squat. 3 white lights and a PB for Ken. Great stuff Kenny!!

Marty Girvan, 35 years of age from the Mighty Apollo Gym, Vic, weighing in at 125.3kg putting him in the 140kg class. He opens on 280kg, executes it quite easily but unfortunately 3 red lights. He takes the same again for his 2nd attempt. It seems a little awkward. He sits into it at the bottom like Paul Nay to make sure of depth and pushes it home for 3 white lights this time. Marty chooses 300kg for his 3rd. His knees wander in a little but he fights it out all the way. A very gutsy squat and a good lift. Marty stared on his usual 200kg bench to no avail He returns gets in the grove and blows it away. Marty then went on to pull 280kg in the deadlift and unfortunately missed 300kg twice he still ended up with a 780kg total and a 1st place trophy to take home for his efforts.

Ian Webb, Vic, only 27 years old and built like a 'German tank', 110kg exactly with huge legs takes 280kg out nice and deep and 3 white lights. On his 2nd attempt he goes to 305kg, very steady out, also nice and deep. Perfect squat. His 3rd as easy as his 2nd with plenty left in his tank. Webby went on to bench 180kg and a 305kg deadlift giving him a very respectful 795kg total and 3rd place in the 110kg division. Great stuff Webby only 5 off that 800kg total.

Chris Brown, Vic, 110kg bodyweight, lifted 300kg with two white lights. He went on to do a successful 320kg very well controlled with a solid final attempt on 330kg. Chris completed three successful benches ending up with 195kg. He then pulled 290kg in the deadlift to give Vince a run for his money. Chris took 305kg for his 2nd but missed it, not giving in he returned and pulled that 305 home oh what a happy man.

Jamie Flood, NSW, weighing a massive 160.5kg also opened on 300kg but had trouble getting down. He misses his opener. He elects 300kg again for his 2nd and sits into it with a 2 to 1 white light favour. His 3rd attempt sees him having trouble getting down again and he loses control. Jamie then benched 170 and went onto deadlift 240kg giving him a 710kg total and second place in the 140+ class.

Vince "the Powerhouse" Simonetta from Mildura Vic is looking very sharp at a trim 105kg. His 310kg opener powers up faster than a steam train. His 2nd attempt on 330kg doesn't seem in the groove but he pushes it through regardless. 3 whites for Vince. His 3rd attempt on 347.5kg is a very solid squat but unfortunately he doesn't lock it out at the top. He elects to take a 4th and the crowd goes wild as Vince comes back to redeem himself. He gets in the groove and just powers it home. Vince does a 180kg and 192.5kg bench respectively just missing 197.5 on his 3rd oh that 200kg isn't far off Vince. Being a deadlift specialist Vince make mince meat of 310, then 325 and then pulls 340kg home to take out the overall best lifter trophy for 2003.

Paul Nay, 34 years old, 115kg, opens with a massive 325kg. With an extremely wide stance he sits at the bottom, has a cup of tea and then powers it up for 2 white lights - a favourable lift. Paul, from the Mighty Apollo gym, goes for a record of 352.5kg on his 2nd attempt. It was very deep but didn't move. He elects it again but crashes to the floor on his 3rd. Paul shocks the crowd as he does and misses his 1st 2 attempts he took 225 then 235 missing them both but came out on his third and blitzed it. He elected 255kg for a third but sorry not today.
Paul finished the day with a 300kg deadlift giving him a nice 860kg total and 1st place in the 125kg class.

Talk about big men and big weights! Michael Pianko, weighing in at 143kg, 32 years of age, from NSW, elects 340kg for an opener - yes, I said opener, folks! Totally steady on the way out, he executes it with ease. A very nice squat. He jumps to 265kg on his 2nd attempt, very deep but loses it on the way up. Great spotting boys! He takes 365kg again for his 3rd. The crowd is electric! The spotters are wired but Michael holds it all together and completes the biggest squat of the day. Michael went on to bench 210kg and deadlift 300kg giving him a 1st place trophy in the 140+ class.
