2003 CAPO Nationals - Female Section
Sunday, August 4th, 2003

By Barry Murray

After a huge Saturday it's now just 9am Sunday and the girls are ready to go. The crowd is a little quiet, especially compared to the huge turn out for the newly introduced National Benchpress Title held yesterday. Anyway Teresa Manning 41 years of age and only weighing 45kg from Qld is set with an 80kg opening squat. Teresa casually walks out to the stage lifts out very steadily and completes a very easy lift. Next we have the fiery red head dynamo from Melbourne, Tegan Colliver, also only 47kg, completes an easy 90kg opener. Susan Jackson all the way from NT at 55 years of age and only 67.5kg takes the bar to 95kg. She walks out, lifts off strongly, but unfortunately misses on depth. Sue will be back. Don't you worry, these Darwin girls have guts that's for sure! Now another girl from Darwin, Amanda Miller, approaches the bar a little more fired than the other girls. At 39 years of age and also only 64kg she opens with two plates plus the collars (105kg), sets herself well and executes a good squat for three white lights.

Now we jump to the 75kg class with Freda Dinakis at 72kg bwt from Bendigo/Melbourne. Freda, 31 years of age, opens with a huge 120kg squat with quite a wide stance and just blows it away. I would say a lot of potential here. The bar now goes to 130kg for Cecelia Titis, who at 44 years of age and 77kg, is one strong lady. Cecelia, down from Alice Springs, takes a very casual approach just like her husband Terence, totally focussed, steady walkout, takes it almost to the floor and executes an easy opener. Talking about strong ladies, next we have Terri-Leigh Wulff, 36 years of age from Qld with 135kg. Terri has obviously adopted the Mason Jardine squat style. She does a strong lift-off, a big step out, a deep "plunge" into the squat, but unfortunately misses the line on the way up. By the looks of this powerful girl she will be back for vengeance with the bar don't you worry.

Teresa Manning returns to the platform for her 2nd attempt of 85kg. Nice and deep and three white lights. Teresa takes 90kg for her 3rd attempt, fights it hard all the way but unfortunately just misses on depth. A huge double bodyweight attempt though, Teresa. Susan Jackson returns to take her 95kg attempt again and manages to just squeeze it through. She then elects 100kg for her third but to no avail. Tegan Colliver walks out very confidently for 100kg on her second attempt, nice strong lift-off, sets herself perfectly but unfortunately misses the groove. Good spotting guy's, we would want to hurt my new fiancée. Tegs will be back and that she does. She fires up on her 3rd attempt with a little Baz grunt as she lifts off, very straight back and pushes it all the way home for three white lights, double bodyweight squat and giving her best female squat of the day. Amanda miller jumps to 112.5kg on her second attempt but unfortunately misses. She then elects 115kg for a 3rd not a wise choice as the 2nd was hard enough so Amanda was left with her 105kg opener.

Freda returns to the platform for her 2nd attempt now with 130kg on the bar with that nice wide stance. She executes it just like the 1st , a very strong attempt. Freda, now close to double bodyweight with 140kg for her third attempt, is still warming up. She walks out and just blows this one away as well. With plenty left in the tank here she elects to take a 4th attempt of 160.5kg - a huge jump for a new Australian record. A very steady walkout and a very strong attempt but she just missed on depth - oh what a shame so close. Freda will surely be setting that record in the near future. Terri-Leigh returns to take her 135 again for her 2nd attempt, she gets in the groove this time and just blows it away. Terri goes on to take 150kg for her third with a steady walkout, sets herself beautifully and executes a nice deep strong squat and three white lights to go with it. Cecelia Titus casual as ever elects 140kg for her second attempt, very deep with a slight drop of the head on the way up but she still powers through for three whites. Oh what a lady. "Ms Concentration" Cecelia elects 145kg for her third but it was just a little too much on the day.

Tegan starts the benchpress section with an easy 47.5kg. She then executes a very well controlled 52.5 but unfortunately misses 55 on her third attempt. Don't worry Tegs that bloody bench will come with time. Susan Jackson opens with 57.5kg but unfortunately hits a sticking point about ½ way up. She then gets into 2nd gear and locks it out but no lift is recorded. "The bar must be pressed in one continual motion" . Susan returned to take 57.5kg on her 2nd but to no avail again. Oh no, Sue isn't having a good day. Relentlessly she returned for a third and final attempt and blow me down she fights it all the way - a bit rocky, but three white lights. Oh that was a close call, good fight Susan.

After benching in the National bench press section yesterday Teresa Manning is back on - remember she is only weighing 45kg. She opens with a massive 60kg. Yes, a plate! She holds the bar with a close grip and gets everything out of those triceps. Teresa pushes it through with ease and then takes a 5kg jump to 65kg, fights it a little all the way through for three whites. Benching two days in a row may have taken its toll a little and 70 wasn't there on the day. It is a big ask but good on you Teresa for having a go. Amanda miller opens with a very strong 62.5kg. She then jumps to an impressive 67.5kg, missing 70 on her 3rd. Freda, having a great day so far, opens with a very impressive 80kg, Yes, very strong. Freda's coach Marty Girvan lifts off 90kg for her second successful attempt and then goes on to complete the bench round with a huge 100kg. Another great lift. Boy this girl has some potential! Cecelia Titus elects 90kg but she loses control and it comes back on her neck- "good spotting guys". She returns with the same weight for her second and slowly but surely eventually pushes it home. Now believe it or not, Cecelia takes a third attempt of 92.5kg. Terence lifts off and oh boy what a lift. Cecelia took about 8 minutes to complete the lift but the bar never stopped moving- an incredibly determined lady. Just amazing! Terri-Leigh finishes the benching section. She opens with a very strong 95kg and just punched it home. Terri with a very wide grip style continues to 106kg a new Australian record for her 2nd attempt. She didn't stop here - she then takes a massive 110kg another world class lift. This is top benching folks, excellent female competition, the best we have seen in years. I am sure that some of our more seasoned lifters will be inspired and we will see them back on stage in the near future.

Now to the deadlift. As I always say, the girls are the most competitive when it comes to deadlift. Tegan starts the round with 100kg and does it with ease. She now elects 110kg and just rips it up. That's my girl! Tegan elects 117.5kg with some guidance to better her own Australian record by 2.5 and is rewarded. Not happy with this she takes a 4th at 120kg. A long term goal in the 48kg division, it is slow off the floor even on the way through, sticks a little she fights it out and locks it home. Oh what a happy girl and a happy coach. Well done Tegs a great effort and 3rd place overall! Teresa Manning opens with a massive 120kg - this is a huge opening attempt for this 45kg lady but she has no problems pulling it home. Teresa plays it safe and just jumps 5kg for a successful 125kg on her second enough to secure 1st place in the open female division. Amanda miller opens on 130kg pulls it through with no problem. Her second attempt of 140kg proved to be just a bit much on the day. She elected it on her 3rd but not today. After a hard squat and painful bench session, Susan Jackson opens with a nice 130kg - three white lights - oh that must feel good! Susan went on to successfully complete 135kg on her second. Good stuff Susan.

150kg is no problem for Freda. On her 1st attempt, she then takes a huge jump to 170.5kg for a new Australian record, fights it a little at the top but pulls it through for three whites. Yes! A successful attempt. Freda elects 175kg for her third, pulls it high on her thigh, but just can't quite lock it. A hard call to better a record on the same day. Well done Freda you have had a great day out and get to take the 2nd place best lifter medal home. Terri-Leigh opens with an easy 160kg. She then jumps to 175kg and just rips it up. Very strong lift and a new Australian record for her. Terri elects 197.5kg but she only pulls it to her knee's. Surprisingly Mason puts in a 4th attempt and revs her up and Oh boy!! After some discussion about the rules, Terri-Leigh walks out and gets it right this time- a new Australian record and the completion of the female section of the Nationals. What a build up to the Elite male final.
