Winter Extra Information

( up dated  28th Feb.2010 )

Mt Buller offers the largest lifting capacity of any Victorian alpine resort and has the capacity to lift 40,000 skiers per hour on its network of 22 lifts.  This means more time out on the slopes skiing / boarding, and less time waiting in queues.   We strongly suggest all beginners have some class lessons as the mountain has a wide range of slopes and can sometimes be 'fog bound'.  NOTE: If you have roller-bladed or skate boarded you are classed as an advanced beginner ! !

Slope statistics are 35% Advanced, 45% are Intermediate.  Terrain area is about 300 plus hectares, Summit altitude 1804m, Village altitude 1600m and Base altitude 1375m.  The nearest town is Mansfield (47 Km).  During winter when arriving at the base of the mountain it is necessary to pay an entry fee.  This is made up of 2 components.  The fixed Entry fee of $ 35.00 and a fee depending on the number of nights you stay - Weekend or Mid-Week.   You usually have to park about 1 Km down from the Village and then there is a 4WD TAXI fee to your lodge accommodation.                           .
Rate as at April 2010  Weekend  $14.00 per night   Mid-week    $ 7.00 per night.
4WD TAXI per person (return)   Adult  $35.00      Children  $21.00

There is an abundance of activities on offer both on and off the slopes, including cross country skiing, snow tubing, snowshoeing and tobogganing.  As well the mountain has the highest cinema in Australia screening the latest movies, a gymnasium and a huge indoor sports complex at the Community Centre.  This also contains the "Alpine Resorts Management Board" office and the local Post Office is outside by the entrance.   This complex was formerly owned / operated by La Trobe University.

Equipment Hire:  those who need to hire ski equipment & clothing, we strongly suggest that it be done on the mountain.  The main reason is if you have any problems (with off mountain hired stuff) the shops on the mountain obviously are NOT very helpful.  I recommend and use the expertise of 'George' (an old mate) at "George's Ski Hire" just near the Clock Tower and opposite the Supermarket.  If you ask for George  (& mention Candoux Ski Club) then he will give you a 10% discount & very good service PH: 5777 6088.  Web: info@georgesskihire.com.au

Mountain access:  we suggest you drive, borrow someone's 4WD.  For any overnight stay, wheel chains need to be carried (suggest you try to fit then in town, for important practise).  The trip will take about 3 hours, if you don't stop too often.  From the Western / Northern suburbs drive north up the Hume Highway, turn off at Tallarook and head for Yea.  Then on to Yarck, Merton & Mansfield, etc.  Eastern suburbs (close to the CBD) drive north up Plenty Rd. to Whittlesea, Kinglake West and Yea (then as above).  Eastern Suburbs, head for Lilydale, Yarra Glen, Glenburn and Yea.  All roads lead to Yea.  Good place to have a break, buy some take away, loo stop.

Coach / Bus Transport:    V-Line (MMBL) from Southern Cross:  week days & Saturday at 8.30 AM, Sunday 10.30 & 1.00 PM.
The V-Line bus at Mansfield meets the Mansfield Mt Buller Bus to take you to the Village.          Phone:-  13 61 96
