The quality of scholarship in Late Antique and Byzantine Studies in Australia and New Zealand continues to be demonstrated with the news that Lisa Bailey has not only been awarded her Masters degree (see Newsletter 36 for abstract of thesis), but has been accepted into the Doctoral programme at Princeton University. We look forward to further news of the achievements of this bright young scholar as her career develops.

On a sadder note we farewell Dr Katherine Adshead, a long-time supporter of the Association's activities and stalwart contributor to AABS Conferences. Katherine has retired to the U.K. after many years of activity in New Zealand. While her presence will sadly be missed at future events, we wish her a long and productive retirement.

It is also with sadness that we inform members of the death earlier this year of Robert Conacher, a faithful and enthusiastic member of AABS. The association extends its sympathy to his friends and family. His support for Byzantine scholarship in Australia continues through his generous bequest to Australian Catholic University of over 700 volumes on matters Byzantine plus a substantial collection of rare maps related to Byzantine historical geography. These items are available for consultation at the McAuley Library, Australian Catholic University, Brisbane.
