FOR PAPERS
The Australian Association of Byzantine Studies (AABS) would like to formally announce a call for papers for its XVth Biennial Conference. This meeting's theme will be 'Imperium and Culture,' looking at the relationship between imperial patronage and involvement in various aspects of cultural expression. Contributors are invited to interpret this theme broadly, and we welcome submissions from all fields. Both scholars with academic affiliation and working independently, as well as postgraduate students, are encouraged to apply.
The XVth Biennial Conference will be held 8-10 February 2008 at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. Please submit paper abstracts of up to 500 words in length by no later than 15 August 2007. Submissions and contact information should be made to the conference organiser:

THE AUSTRALIAN EARLY MEDIEVAL ASSOCIATION: The Australian Early Medieval Association encourages and supports the study of the early medieval period by facilitating the exchange of ideas and information amongst members. By sharing information and insights across the disciplines, progress and interest in the field of early medieval research can be ensured, particularly in Australia where access to experts in the field and to sources can be difficult to negotiate. The aim is to provide a network of specialists and scholars in this area of research, who may act as a source of feedback, information and advice to other scholars and students. As membership of the Association grows, formal networks and mentoring arrangements may be established, particularly amongst postgraduate students and early career researchers.
CALL FOR PAPERS
Papers relating to matters of conversion and cultural transformation in all disciplines and geographic areas are invited. The Association will also be pleased to accept submissions on any other area of early medieval research. Submissions should be sent to the Conference convenor, Dr Carole Cusack.
Submissions should take the form of an abstract of no more than 200 words for a 20-minute paper (followed by 10 minutes of question time). Abstracts should be forwarded to the conference convenor by 30 June 2007. Please include affiliation, contact details and a preliminary indication of any audio-visual requirements with your abstract.

Language, Script, and Acculturation in Graeco-Roman Egypt: An umbrella research program, lead by Drs Malcolm Choat and Trevor Evans, uniting projects (including those listed below) focusing on cultural interaction of the classical and Egyptian worlds in the Graeco-Roman period.
Religious authority and linguistic change in late antique Egypt: non-elite perspectives on the rise of monasticism in contemporary documents: ARC-funded project dealing with the rise of monasticism, seen from the point of view of the Christian Laity, and especially though contemporary documents on papyrus in Greek and Coptic.
The Archive of Apa Johannes: A re-edition one of the most extensive bilingual (Greek and Coptic) monastic archives on papyrus in from fourth century CE Egypt.
Papyri from the Rise of Christianity in Egypt: a project to analyse the papyrus texts documenting Christianity in Egypt before the victory of Constantine (324), a collaborative project within the Ancient History Documentary Research Centre, to be published by Cambridge University Press.

Networks in Late Byzantine and Early Islamic monastic communities: a collaborative
project with Dr Heike Behlmer (Macquarie University), analysing the letters
on ostraca sent between monasteries in the Theban region, especially the
monastery of Epiphanius, monastery of Severus (Sheikh Abd el-Qurna) and
the Deir el-Bakhit and satellite monastic cells in tombs in the Dra' Abu
el-Naga.

1. Byzantine humour
A detailed study of Byzantine humour which will analyse all humorous and satirical works written in Greek between AD 527 and 1453 and examine their common themes and preoccupations, placing them firmly within their social context. All evidence for humorous response to intentional and unintentional humour will also be examined to find out exactly what made the Byzantines laugh and why. The project will establish that humour was manifested throughout Byzantine society at all social levels and firmly underpinned entertainment at court and in the street.

Poverty
and Welfare in Late Antiquity
In
this project a recently proposed model (Peter Brown, 2002) of the relationship
between poverty and leadership at a time of social change is subjected
to scrutiny by focusing on three key figures in a defined period across
a sample geographic spread: John Chrysostom (Syria), Augustine (North Africa),
and Leo I (Italy). The results will be published in a number of articles
and three monographs. The chief investigators are Prof
Pauline
Allen (on Augustine), Dr Wendy Mayer (on John Chrysostom) and Dr Bronwen
Neil (on Pope Leo I), from the Centre for Early Christian Studies, ACU.
From 2006?2008, the ARC has funded the employment of several post-doctoral
members of the Centre on the project as senior research associates: Dr
Silke Trzcionke, Dr Geoffrey Dunn, Dr Anna Silvas and (from late 2007)
Dr Edward Morgan.

A book tentatively entitled The Social Identity of the Ascetic Master in Late Roman Christianity. I want to observe where ascetics operated, in what guise, and in relation to whom. I explore the notion that 'ascetic' is a label that can be applied well beyond the apparently 'monastic' sphere: it is the content of a person's address that matters, more than his (or her) 'professional' guise. I believe, moreover, that ascetics should be defined most clearly by a teaching role, and that anyone found teaching or recommending (and exemplifying) a radical life of reflective virtue can be termed an 'ascetic'. Nevertheless, there was competition among such 'masters', both for audiences and for claims to authentic formation.
