Manna Gum

Eucalyptus Viminalis

Common, widespread, but very variable in size and growth. May be tall, 25-50m near mountain streams, with smooth white trunk and narrow 'weeping' leaves; smaller, spreading, on more open sites. Mostly on moist but well-drained alluvial soils near watercourses, but also on drier sites of higher levels and tablelands; usually with other species.

Bark: Usually some darker persistent bark at base; remainder smooth, whitish, peeling in ribbons.

Leaves: Adult - 10-20cm long and rather narrow, mid-green both sides. Juvenile - opposite, stalkless, narrow, bright green and never glaucous.

Buds; Usually in 3's. Flowers any time, chiefly summer.

Fruit: Often in 3's. Very short pedicels, disc raised and convex.

Wood; Pale, not strong nor durable, burns quickly.

Comment: Leaves favoured by koalas.
