Medium to tall tree, 10-60m, with greyish gum-type bark; somewhat stunted on harsher near-coastal sites, but most commonly a tall, robust tree of mountain forests with dark crown of long leaves.

Bark: Smooth, grey, often with yellow and whitish patches, shed in strips or plates; may be rough and darker at base. Commonly with horizontal 'cuts' (insect larvae).

Leaves: Adult - long 12-35 cm, dark green; veins regular and distinct. Juvenile - opposite, stalkless, broad, often with glaucous waxy bloom.

Buds; Elongated, usually with short pedicel and conical cap. Flowers February-July.

Fruit: Goblet shaped with short pedicel.
|
|
Wood; Pale brown, hard, heavy, moderately strong and durable; used for light construction.
