Black Wattle

Mearnsii

Grows to 10m, occasionally more. Often broad and spreading; dark green foliage sometimes to the ground. Bark is smooth, dark green or black, may have gum on the surface.

 

Leaves: Feather leaves with many pairs of leaflets, dark shiny green upper surface, duller deneath; 2-3mm long and almost touching.

 

Flowers October to December. Soft creamy balls.

 

Seed pods are narrow, reddish-brown and lumpy, curving as they open.

 

Dry wood burns hot and quickly. Tanin is obtained from the bark.
