WHAT IS U3A: University for the Third Age?
The first U3A was formed in France in 1972.
The first Australian group was formed in 1982 and the Ballarat group in 1987.
Don’t be discouraged by the word “University”, it is being used in its medieval sense of a community united in the pursuit of stimulating ideas, activities and knowledge.
The aim is to keep the mind active and to improve the whole quality of life.
U3A members organise their own activities by drawing on the skills of one another. Like minded members from all walks of life are encouraged to form study groups and share their knowledge with fellow members, all on a voluntary basis.
U3A is a voluntary self-help organisation for:
*Those who have reached retiring age.
*Or any persons not engaged in full time employment
The “Third Age” is active retirement or leisure time.
