A Year in Reflection

 by Anthony Langley - Club President 2007/08

"To be provided with the opportunity to lead this club is a most valuable gift and one that I sincerely appreciate.

During my changeover speech on becoming president last year I said that our club would focus on the vision statement that club members here at Brighton Beach developed two years ago, and that is:

The Rotary Club of Brighton Beach is a caring club with a purpose.

We work together within our community upholding Rotary values while having fun.

I am proud to say that as a Club and as individual Rotarians, I believe we have indeed lived that vision and we should be rightly proud of our achievements over the past 12 months.

Our major fundraising activity for the year was our Antiques Valuation Day at Brighton Town Hall. Funds raised from this event were donated to the Brighton Benevolent Society and the Bayside Hydrotherapy Pool Project.

During the year each of the club committees delivered a comprehensive range of programs across their portfolios. The following is just a summary and by no means covers everything we have done.

  • Coordination of a Clean Up Australia Day site at Green Point Brighton Beach;

  • Tree planting in central Victoria to help slow the salinity and erosion problems in this region;
  • Club members enjoyed a weekend trip and working bee at Rotary's Camp Getaway;
  • We offered blood pressure checks offered free to members of the local community;
  • We provided support for cervical cancer research and prostate awareness programs;
  • The club also sponsored a candidate in the Shine On Awards, as well as students for RYLA and RYPEN (both leadership and development programs for young people);
  • We fitted water saving shower heads in each unit at the Halcyon senior citizen's village East Brighton;
  • Together with the Rotary Club of Brighton North we continued our sponsorship of students completing the Graduate Diploma of Adolescent Health and Welfare at the University of Melbourne;
  • We provided the Year 7 Bursary Award at Brighton Secondary College;
  • Earlier in the year we completed our major international project in the Philippines with our sister club Metro Clark, for which we received a matching grant;
  • We supported Donations In Kind, which supply goods to overseas countries such as East Timor;
  • We contributed to Shelterboxes for cyclone ravaged Burma; and
  • Supported overseas literacy, health and sanitation projects.

I am pleased to say we met our club commitment to funding the Rotary Foundation. The Foundation delivers a range of programs that help to improve the lives of people around the world such as supporting literacy programs and providing vaccinations against polio.

We also embarked on another range of major overseas projects in the Philippines and Thailand, in conjunction with three other clubs in our district.

So all in all 2007/08 was a very busy year for the club.

But it wasn't all hard work, our club members enjoyed club fellowship activities such as

Ten Pin Bowling, restaurant meals, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner and a Trivial Pursuit Night with neighbouring clubs.

During my year I believe that closer links were forged between our club and neighbouring Rotary Clubs including Brighton, Brighton North, Elsternwick, Glen Eira and Caulfield, this has benefited each of our clubs.

On Tuesday 1 July 2008 I handed the presidency of the club to Margie Desmyth I know our club will be in good hands as Margie has an incredible drive to deliver projects and is highly regarded by all the members of our club."
