The Bruthen Blues & Arts Festival has a successful 12 year history and is acknowledged across Victoria, if not Australia, as a unique and well presented rural festival. The Bruthen Blues & Arts Festival volunteer planning committee is working to generate a more community owned & driven festival. The idea for this play emerged through our desire to continue to engage the community in meaningful ways in this festival.
As part of the 2006 festival we generated three new activities towards this aim - the first ever ‘Bruthen Original Community Song’; a regional choir; and a workshop program in the two local primary schools. These projects were very successful steps towards our new goals, so we were encouraged to apply for funding in order to continue to expand the festival program and community involvement through the first ever, original community play. We are grateful to Festivals Australia and Vic Health for their support of this exciting project.

This play will predominantly be developed with the students at the schools. We are excited that not only are Bruthen and Tambo Upper schools involved in this project, but also the Clifton Creek Primary School for the first time! Community Arts workers, Darren McCubbin and Eva Grunden will support the Bruthen Blues & Arts Festival Planning Committee to create this theatre piece that takes participants and audiences on an historical journey of Bruthen – the township, environment and people. This journey will take place three times during the festival program, along the picturesque and historically significant Rail Trail.

A professional musical composer, Padma Newsome will also be working with the community to write original music and songs for the play, and theatre production specialist and visual artist Rachel Joy (who has worked with Snuff Puppets for some time!) will also be working on the project.

You can be involved in a small or big way depending on your availability. For example, you might just be involved in the production side of the play – learning some great skills from Don who worked for many years for the Victoria State Opera. … or perhaps you could be involved by making some props or puppets …… or you might be involved in the music or singing, or perhaps you have always wanted to have a try at acting and you could be a STAR and take on a key role as a performer!

The play will take place three times during the weekend of the festival. It will run for approximately an hour and a quarter:
Dress rehearsal: 4.30 to 6pm Thursday 14th February 2008
Performance 1: 5 to 6pm Friday 15th February 2008
Performance 2 & 3:11am to 12noon and 4 to 5pm Saturday 16th February 2008

PLEASE take up this opportunity to work with some AMAZING professional artists and have great FUN!
