MINE MANAGERS OF BENDIGO & BEYOND
Whilst
the focus of this research has always been to identify and name the Mine
Managers of Bendigo & District, this database has been expanded to include
some Mine Managers from areas other than Bendigo. I have done this because I’ve
found that sometimes Managers moved from mining district to mining district and
crossed over mining areas. The main
focus is still the Bendigo
area. I have separated the entries
with the Bendigo & District entries at the front and the others following
on in a second section. This is by no means a complete list but a continuing
effort to record as many Bendigo
Mine Managers as possible and to link them with the mines they worked in.
There
is no one place where this information is held or to be found - it is the
results of many searches through local records of all descriptions and from
family certificates and information from historians and researchers. The names are shown as they are reported
in various publications.
I have attempted to document as many Bendigo and District Mine Managers as
possible over the past ten years. They are not easy to find and I have taken
information to date from various sources. I have by no means covered all of the
Bendigo and
district Mine Managers but have documented over 1,000 names to date. Whilst I recognise that not all mine
managers were of Cornish extraction, it is true that in Bendigo at least, a large proportion of mine
managers were of Cornish birth or Cornish parentage and this needs to be
acknowledged. I originally published the details in A4 booklet form so that
others can see the results of my research to date. My aim with the project is to provide
the names of the managers, with the names of the mines they were in charge of
(if at all possible) and the time spans I have been able to ascertain from
various records.
I am no
longer producing the printed book versions of the database as the cost involved
in printing small runs of non-commercial publications is far too prohibitive
for the self publisher. I have
instead placed the updated mine managers database on cd and in March 2010 it
will be available as part of the purchase of the Bendigo- It’s Cornish
DVD which will be produced and made available through the Cornish Association
of Bendigo & District Inc. More
information can be found about the release on the Cornish Association of
Bendigo web page which can be found at:
http://home.vicnet.net.au/~bendcorn/
Records have been
taken from existing Mine Managers Report Books, Betty
Jackman's Bendigo Advertiser Birth, Death & Marriage
Notices books, Personal records from Noelene Wild, Annals of Bendigo, Personal
contributors, Bendigo and district directories, Local school registers, Bendigo
Rate notices and any source which was able to give names of mine managers and
the mines they were attached to.
- I thank the people who have taken the
trouble to pass on information as they came across it and those people who
have willingly given data relating to their own family histories. This
project is an ongoing one and I'm sure there are many more mine managers
from this area yet to be uncovered. If you have any information to add to
the database it would be very much appreciated so that I can fulfil my
commitment to document as many of these managers as possible. I welcome
further input and can be contacted at :
