Ruck |
1995 saw Peter Somerville emerge as a top ruckman. As a result of Paul Salmon's continuing injury problems, the burden of rucking fell with this man. Many were critical of him in past seasons, but throughout 1995 they were forced to change their tune. His confidence grew enormously, to the point where he was taking big marks in packs regularly, and kicking goals in most matches. His rucking style improved, and he now provides good drive out of the centre. Essendon has been looking for its ruckmen to take the next step, and Somerville, along with Alessio, have certainly done that. He represented Victoria in 1991, and as his rucking skills improve with age, he may be in line for more representation in the future.
