Ben Doolan started his career after coming with much acclaim from Sydney. Early he had some bad luck with injuries at Essendon, but he started playing his best football in the last few games of 1995, going in much harder than most other players. 1996 saw Ben continue this form, being among the top possession winners at Essendon. He finished fourth in the 1996 best and fairest, and received the Most Improved player award for the year.
