Paul Barnard came to Essendon as part of the Paul Salmon trade. At Hawthorn, Paul was know for his rough work around the ground, which is something Essendon has lacked until recent times. He showed good form in the 1996 Lightning Premiership win, but suffered a knee injury early in the year which set him back. He played a few games around the ground when he returned, and then struck quite good form towards the end of the 1996 season.
