Mark "Bomber" Thompson relinquished his captaincy at the end of 1995, but decided to stay on for this year as a player. And what a wise decision it turned out to be, as his experience and skill on the backline has been extremely valuable this year. He was captain of our last premiership win in 1993. His nickname really says it all - he would do almost anything for the Dons. He began his career at Essendon when the team was having success in the mid 1980s. Involved in both 1984 and 1985 premiership wins, he tasted success at an early age. But injury has been cruel to Bomber, and he, like so many others, sustained a knee injury with threatened to ruin his career. But he bounced back and now resides on the backline at Essendon. He helps to create the calm and composed atmosphere that is apparent on the Essendon backline. In 1995, once again, he had injury problems, causing him to miss almost half the games. But it was good to see him strike top form in the last few games of the year for Essendon, which has continued into this year. Injury and age has again taken its toll on Bomber, but even if he can only play a few games for the rest of the year, his contribution will be well worth it.
