Gary O'Donnell's leadership over the years has been rewarded with the captaincy for 1996. He has been with the club for a long time now, and in recent years has enjoyed some of his best form. He was given the honour of being named Essendon's Best and Fairest winner in our last premiership year, 1993. He was runner-up in the Best and Fairest twice - in 1989 and 1990, and third last year. He is known as one of the best on-ballers in the league. He regularly picks up a ton of possessions, and uses them to effect. He represented Victoria in 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1993. 1995 was another good year for Gary, continuing into 1996. Once again he is creating play from around the packs, and gaining as many possessions as any other Essendon player, thus cementing his tag at Essendon as "Mr Reliable".
