Mark "Bomber" Thompson is the current captain, and captain of our last premiership win in 1993. The only other current player to play more games than Bomber is Paul Salmon. His nickname really says it all - he would do almost anything for the Dons. He began his career at Essendon when the team was having success in the mid 1980s. Involved in both 1984 and 1985 premiership wins, he tasted success at an early age. But injury has been cruel to Bomber, and he, like so many others, sustained a knee injury with threatened to ruin his career. But he bounced back and now resides on the backline at Essendon. He helps to create the calm and composed atmosphere that is apparent on the Essendon backline. This year, once again, he has had injury problems, causing him to miss almost half the games. But it was good to see him strike top form in the last few games of the year for Essendon, and it may sway him towards staying with the Dons for another year. He was the winner of the Best and Fairest in 1987 and 1990, and the under 19 Best and Fairest in 1981.
Achievements: Best and fairest 1987,90, 3rd best and fairest 1986,92, most improved 1985, best clubman 1985, most determined 1984,86, Essendon premiership sides 1984,85,93, Essendon night premiership sides 1984,90,93, captain since 1992.
