1995 has seen Somerville emerge as a ruckman. As a result of Paul Salmon's continuing injury problems, the burden of rucking has fallen with this man. Many have been critical of him in past seasons, but this year they would be changing their tune. His confidence has grown enormously, to the point where he is taking big marks in packs regularly, and kicking goals in most matches. His rucking style has improved, and he now provides good drive out of the centre. Essendon has been looking for its ruckmen to take the next step, and Somerville, along with Alessio, have certainly done that this year. He represented Victoria in 1991, and as his rucking skills improve with age, he may be in line for more representation in the future.
