Paul Salmon is one of the most experienced players at Essendon. He started his career in blistering form at full-forward. He was undoubtedly the best in the league when disaster struck - the most dreaded injury in football - the knee. He did his knee in round 13 of the 1984 season, a year in which Essendon would subsequently win the flag. He was in amazing form that year, and his injury was a tragedy. Ever since his comeback, Salmon has not been the same powerhouse in front of goals. He has, however, continued to kick a bag of goals here and there, but it seems that now he is more known for his ruck/forward work. With three big men at the club sharing the ruck work around, Peter Somerville, Stephen Alessio and Salmon, it gives the big man versatility. He can kick some goals at full-forward, and then have a run on the ball. Although most Essendon supporters would love to see Salmon as a full-time full-forward, kicking goals like he did in 1984, he has been invaluable at times as a ruckman around the ground. More recently Salmon has had more injury problems, this time with his back. He has missed many games over the past two seasons, and we all hope that he can get over the back-related injuries and strike top form again. (Postnote: Paul was traded to Hawthorn at the end of the 1995 season)
