1995 - The Brownlow Report

Well, the Brownlow is over for another year, and congratulations must go to Paul Kelly from the Swans. He is possibly one of the most popular winners in recent times. People everywhere admire him for his courageous play, and finally it is recognised with football's highest individual honour. We had a very good performer in Michael Long, who actually finished equal second (with two ineligible players above him) with 16 votes. It is good that the votes reflected the great year that he had, including 5 best on grounds, more than any other player in the competition. Peter Somerville, another player to have a good year this year also finished quite highly, with 12 votes. Surprisingly, James Hird ended up with only 7 votes, but the Brownlow is always known for not accurately showing the good performers throughout the year. Essendon as a team ended up with 80 votes, third overall behind Carlton (99) and Geelong (88). After looking at the votes I gave comapred to the umpires, they were surprisingly similar. Even in the games where I disagreed, I would not have begrudged the players who received votes anyway. Anyway, here are the totals for each player (including a breakdown of the number of 3-2-1 votes), followed by a round by round listing of the votes.
