Friends of the Back Creek Working Bees
|
Back Creek is one of the tributaries of Gardiners
Creek; one of the major tributaries of the the Yarra River.
Back Creek rises as a spring on the slopes of the hill at the corner of Canterbury Rd
and Elgar Rd
in Box Hill (there is a Melbourne Water tower and reservoir on this hill.)
It now runs in underground pipes as far as Union Rd, after which it is open
until Cornell St.
It runs in the open again from Camberwell Rd to a short distance South of
Toorak Rd, and finally emerges at Dawson St, Glen Iris, about 500m before
it joins Gardiners Creek.
The Friends of Back Creek are particularly concerned
with the section of the Creek between Riversdale Road and Cornell Street
( Melways Map 60 G2 )
Friends of Back Creek working bees are held on the third
Sunday of the month from March to December 10am to 12pm. There is an
additional working bee each year for Clean Up Australia Day in early March.

RYPEN/RYLA Programmes
|
Rotary RYPEN/RYLA Programmes
The Club sponsors youth in both RYPEN ( Rotary Youth
Enrichment Program ) and RYLA ( Rotary Youth Leadership Program ). Although
our club is a mere two years old, we have been very active in sponsoring
young people. So far, the club has sponsored eight students for RYPEN and
one student for RYLA.
Our RYPEN candidates have been sourced as a result of
our very active relationship with the Kew High School.
RYPEN develops the seeds of a very active leadership programme within the
school, enabling participants to become more aware of the way they can
improve themselves.
The club is actively involved in the District 9800
RYLA Committee, ensuring that we have a hands on role in both the selection
and administration of the RYLA programme in our area. To source individuals
between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five is an enjoyable task, and
requires twelve months planning. The candidates return to speak to us about
their adventures. It is always a great pleasure to see what they gain from
the experience!

Previous Projects
|
The Club has been proud to have been involved in many
worth while projects in our short history, below are summaries of a few of
them:
|
Cam Care Legal Service Reception
|
There has been a steady demand from low income
residents of Boroondara for legal advice. Camcare had thirteen lawyers who
were rostered to provide this service at the Camberwell site, three or four
times a year. Advice is provided on many aspects of the commercial, common,
consumer, criminal, family, property law. Lawyers offer preliminary advice
to clients, suggest a course of action or refer them to specialists, if
necessary.
Members of the Rotary Club of Boroondara along with
other Camcare volunteers acted as receptionists. In addition to the legal
service; youth counseling is also conducted on Wednesday evenings. Shifts
are either 5 to 7pm or 7 to 9pm.

ABC Giving Tree Collection
|
The ABC Giving Tree program links Rotary clubs in the
vicinity of ABC Stores to collect gifts left at the ABC Giving Trees and
the deliver them to charities that have been identified for
assistance. We help bring our community together and honour the spirit
of Christmas through the ABC Giving Tree. The Rotary Club of
Boroondara has worked with other Rotary clubs and the ABC Shop at Chadstone
to distribute the gifts.
The ABC Giving Tree provides a focus for the collection
of donations to charities for the distribution to needy children and
families at Christmas. Organisations such as the Salvation Army, Camcare,
Red Cross, St Vincent De Paul and others have all benefited from the ABC
Giving Tree over the years.
