Dear Members: We have had a rather eventful three months since our last newsletter. Our President, Elaine, had a heart attack, but the good news is that she is progressing nicely, our Secretary, Diana, has had a full knee reconstruction, and is going to need some intensive therapy. One of our members, Ann Popham, had a fall, and broke her hip, but she is recovering well also, and our past President, Beth, is still having ongoing problems, which we sincerely hope can at least be controlled. The good news is that we have had a number of interesting things happening in the Society, the most exciting of course was the visit to our Society by the Japanese Bonsai Master, Hirotoshi Saito. Approximately 19 people did workshops with Hiro, and I am sure they all learnt a lot from him. We thank Geoff and Marj. Vanner for once again bringing Hiro down to Tootgarook, and Kerry and Steve, for assisting our members. We also thank Kerry, who looked after Hiro for the night, and then returned him to Melbourne. Our other highlights were, having John Rash as a guest demonstrator, and John again for conducting beginner’s classes for us, and 9 people took advantage of his kind offer. Coming events: In August, we are holding a potting night, and we do hope that many will attend. This is the first time we have had a night like this for some years, and we would like to see some of our newer members bring along their trees and get some helpful advice, as all our tutors will be available to assist. Those who can’t make it on the Thursday, we do have a workshop on the Saturday, 10am to 4pm, so all are welcome to attend, it is free! In September, Paul is giving a demonstration on evergreens, and October, Kerry will be doing the Saikei, in place of Elaine. Kerry is giving Elaine a rest. November is our AGM, and our yearly election of office bearers will take place. This will also be a “problem tree” night, so save all your problem trees for our panel of “experts”. We will be holding our last workshop for the year on Saturday, October the 12th. This was on the program as October the 19th, but we changed the date to fit in with the Church of Christ. Old friends: It was nice to see our friend, and life member, Bob Russell, who came over from King Island to do a workshop with Hiro. Bob looked very well, and is enjoying life on the Island.
