'He Knew He'd Make It' (by Allan Pinches)

He started as a man of high ideals Who made himself a scheme
That he would win himself some power To help his fellow beings
He looked around, he thought a lot,
But he didn't like all he could see
His vision was everyone equal In a land of opportunity.

He was twenty-five when he got his first chance
He knew it was boom or bust
When our politician's road began
With a seat on the Board of Works Trust
The Treasury benches were far away But he had to start somewhere
And he knew through the Board of Commissioners
That he soon one day might be the mayor.

Soon he was the Mayor and power was his But waiting in the wings
Were the businessmen and the patrons
Who were pulling all of the strings.
He knew he'd make it to the top.
He knew that he would never stop.

Election day came around - it was his finest hour
He packed his bags for Capitol Hill, to take his seat of power.
In Parliament by the way he spoke all said he would go far
Pretty soon he'd climbed to the Ministry,
And the throne room door was ajar.
He knew he'd make it to the top.
He knew that he would never stop.

A few years later he had become The Government's Number Two
As the Honourable The Treasurer He knew he was in the stew
Well the headlines screamed as the graphline soared
On the unemployment chart
'No comment' he snapped at the newsmen
As they were throwing their verbal darts
'What about jobs for all?' said the man from the A.B.C.
As the question was ignored the protestors roared
And they burned his effigy
He knew he'd make it to the top.
He knew that he could never stop.

He got the sack The Party had To give someone the blame
And with the money from his superannuation cheque
He bought himself a farm....
