I took the Queenscliff ferry cross the bay
Over to the Portsea side
By and large, a bright and sunny day.

I remember my surprise
At how wide the expanse
Of water that we had to cross.

And once or twice the pleasure
Of watching a pair of dolphins
Their fins surfacing nearby.

But my main memory is of Portsea and Sorrento
And their flotilla of boats
Of various sizes
Moored between the ferry
And the shore.

And of the wavy oscillating light
Dancing against
The hulls
Of the boats
From the sun reflecting off
The peaceful, gently-bobbing swell.
