Sitting in church on Christmas Day
Not feeling very Christmassy
And suddenly feeling ill In some unspecified way
I got up and went outside.

I had barely crossed the threshold
When my mood suddenly lifted
As I turned to face a tree
Four or five metres away.

"Man! Happy Midsummer!"
Flooded into my mind
As if by telepathic communion.

Beaming broadly
I went over to the tree
I held its trunk between my hands
Wishing it too a "Happy Midsummer".

Surprised at how glad I was feeling
I made my way back home
Stopping by many a tree
To share our common joy
At the recent passing of the longest day.

Evoking echoes ancestral in my mind
Of times long misty gone
When the march of the seasons
Was with joyous dance and merry feast celebrated
By communities
More in tune than we are
With the rhythms of Nature
