HEX

Hex has very simple rules. It has no chance factor or hidden information. It has one of the simplest set of rules for a two player boardgame of this type.

Despite the simple rules, it has considerable subtlety and depth.

RULES

Hex is played on a board composed on interlocking hexs in a diamond shape. The board has 4 sides.

One player takes the white pieces, while the other takes the black pieces. Players alternate in placing one of their pieces on any empty cell. White moves first. Pieces are never removed from the board.

A player wins when he creates a chain from one edge of the board to the other edge of the board.

THEORY

Hex can be played on different sized boards. The standard size is 11 X 11 which creates a game of considerable complexit

Draws are not possible. In a perfectly played game, the player moving first will always win. As the board increases in size, the advantage of the first move lessens.

COMPUTER PLAY

To write a strong playing Hex program is not as simple as it appears, due to the huge number of possible positions. Apparently, even the game on a 7x7 board has not been exhaustively analyzed.

Nevertheless, I have written a Hex playing program, which should give you a fair game. You can download Hex 1.0 here 66 K .

Hex has some similarities with the game of Go, and is played by some Go players.
Hex on a large board, like chess and Go, is extremely difficult to program to play perfectly.

HEX PROGRAM

5x5 Hex board
In my program I use squares rather than hexs, but with the same result. The current version is FREEWARE and may be freely distributed. There are many possible features that can be added to it in the future. If you would like to see more work done on the game, or you know of any other hex program Email me re Hex
