No Diet Day, May 6
International No Diet Day is a day to: ·
Accept, enjoy and look after our bodies and ourselves ·
Reject diets that endanger our health and stop us from eating well and
enjoying life ·
Focus on being healthy at any weight rather than thin at any cost Mary Evans Young, the director of the British anti-diet campaign Diet
Breakers, began No Diet Day in 1992.
Body Image and Health Inc then introduced No Diet Day to Australia in
1995 to raise awareness of the health risks associated with dieting and
the consequences of poor body image. The day is now celebrated internationally by nations including the United
States, Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The importance of the No Diet Message is recognized by health
organisations and government departments in many states who participate
in the celebrations. International
No Diet Day is also celebrated around Australia by a wide range of
organisations including schools, community health centres, hospitals,
women’s health services, fitness centres and business. What
can you do?
Check this site for updates on the Body Image and Health Inc. INDD
campaign for 2001. (See Events.) You can help spread the No Diet Message by downloading the fact sheets
from this site and giving them to friends, family and colleagues. Start the day by looking for positives.
Think of five things you like about your body. Host a No Diet Day celebration – a lunch or breakfast is an ideal way
to celebrate the day. The emphasis is on enjoying food and eating well,
not bingeing. A healthy
approach to eating involves enjoying a variety of foods without feeling
guilty, and paying attention to your body which can tell you when you
are physically hungry, full or just satisfied.
