Bushfires are a regular event in the Australian bush. The Bend of Islands area which encompasses the ELZ is served by the Christmas Hills Fire Brigade which has a station in the local area as well as its main shed in Ridge Road Christmas Hills.

Community participtation in all aspects of fire brigade activity has long been part of life in the Bend of Islands. Many residents are volunteer fire fighters and others support the brigade in other ways. Café Benders, a fire brigade fund raiser and social occasion is a monthly event in the Bend of Islands.
