Survey results, April 2008 (summary)

Thanks for your time completing this little survey. This was intended to give me a bit of a snapshot of the orchestra as it is currently, and helps me as I plan for the future.
Here is a statistical analysis of the results – In analysing data of this kind a plain is sometimes a bit misleading, so in some cases I have included the Median (essentially the middle response)
Also, since the print newsletter was issed last week I have had another 5 survey responses, so some of the data is a little different, but the trends remain the same.

  1. How long have you been playing your instrument?
Average response: 28.59 years, Median response: 27

  2. How long have you played with the BSO?
         Average: 10.38 years, Median: 3.5

  3. What's the highest level you've achieved?
         Median: AMEB 8

  4. Do you have regular lessons?
         Average: no (22.86% yes)

  5. If no, when did you last have (regular) lessons?
         Average: 1986

  6. Do you have 'special' one–off lessons?
         Average: no (25.71%)

  7. Do you regularly practice at home?
         Average: yes (80%)

  8. Do you regularly practice your BSO music?
         Average: yes (70.59%)

  9. How difficult would you rate the music you play in the BSO? (1, very difficult – 5 not difficult at all)
         Median: 3 (medium)

  10. How challenging would you like the music to be? (1, very difficult – 5 not difficult at all)
         Median: 2 (difficult)

  11. Rate the repertoire you would like to play, with 1 being most like to play, 5 least like to play:

  12. Do you visit the BSO website 50% 'yes'
         50% 'yes'

  13. If you do visit it, how useful do you find the website? (1, very useful – 5 not useful at all)
         Av: 2.27 Med: 2

I was very interested to find out how difficult you found the music, and heartened with the response. On the whole, people rated the difficulty of the music in the middle of the range (3), yet wanted it to be a little bit more difficult (2) – there were some response that wanted the music to be less difficult and I will aim to remember this.
So what do I do with this – well, Romantic and Classical Symphonies seem to be popular and will continue to be the core of our music making.
However while I was surprised to see vocal music so poorly rated I do consider it to be crucial to an orchestra to work with singers and hope to do so on a regular basis. There are a few other things which surprised me and I would like to conduct this survey in a few years time to see what has changed.
