DANIEL HERBST: Musical Director 1993-2007.
Daniel was our Resident Conductor and Musical Director since 1993, having joined the orchestra as a violinist in 1984.
A violin student of Diana DiGilio and Brian Blake, Daniel studied music at Melbourne University and Burwood State College. He worked as Assistant Editor and Staff Arranger at Allans Music where he was involved in the preparation of works for publication and was able to meet and work with a number ofprominent Australian composers and study their new works firsthand. The Musical Director of Allans (Brian Martin, a grandson of the composer Alfred Hill) encouraged him to begin conducting and he was engagedin directing a Jazz Orchestra at the Musicians Club, working with Light Opera companies and directing choral groups around Melbourne.
In 1982 Daniel and his family moved to Bendigo where Daniel taught music at Girton College and was involved in setting up school-based ensembles. He was Musical Director of the Bendigo Youth Orchestra from the mid-80's until late 1999. He now works as a violin teacher andfreelance musician in Bendigo and Echuca.
At the end of 2007 Daniel announced that he would step down as music director of the BSO after 14 stimulating and successful years.

PATRICK (Padraic) SAVAGE
Patrick writes: "I was a member in the late eighties/early 90s and gained much valuable orchestral and solo experience that I still benefit from. I am now principal first violin in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London and have several credits as a film composer."
In 1994 Patrick received a fellowship from the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, which enabled him to study with Dr Andrievsky at the Royal College of Music.
He graduated from the RCM with first class honours and many accolades including the inaugural Yehudi Menuhin Award and prizes from the Countess of Munster, Emily English, Martin and Ian Fleming Trusts.
Patrick now lives in London. He has appeared as soloist with many orchestras in the UK including the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Young Musicians' Symphony Orchestra, the RCM Symphony, the London Soloists Chamber Orchestra, the English Soloists Ensemble and the London Baroque Ensemble.
He has also appeared in the Wigmore Hall as finalist in the 1999 Young Concert Artist Trust auditions and his playing has featured on BBC Radio 2 and 3. His recitals have featured a wide and varied repertoire, frequently unaccompanied, and have included programs of the first 12 Paganini Caprices.

ANDREW YOUNG, our first Stuart Anderson award holder, was chosen for his evident promise as a hornist, and over three years he certainly lived up to his promise.
Andrew's presence significantly strengthened our Horn section,and his experience in the BSO contributed to his development as a player.
In the 2005 VCE examinations Andrew was judged to be the best hornist in the state. He is currently undertaking music studies at the University of Melbourne.
Andrew is also an excellent pianist.
