MURRAY RIVER COOKOUT
August 15/16
What a great weekend it turned out to be! Some people arrived Friday afternoon, others on Saturday, twenty in all. Really stressful, sitting on a sandbar on the Murray, enjoying good company and the occasional wine. Some went for a walk to see if the old barge was still visible due to low river levels. Many hands prepared veggies, for roasting (especially Nicholas Buykx) and a fire for coals. Thanks to all those who brought wood, especially Laurice who found some very seasoned redgum from somewhere. Tended to be sleepy though! Soon five camp ovens were sizzling away with lamb, beef, potatoes, pumpkin, sweet potatoes and parsnip.
With everything ready on queue, tables with white tablecloths, candles, gaslights and bottles of wine appeared. A great meal and a great way for the club to socialize. Dessert appeared with an apricot crumble, rhubarb and peach crumble topped with custard and cream.
Rain overnight and Sunday put a dampener on proceedings so all left after breakfast.
Thanks to all who helped in organizing the dinner.
