STRATHBOGIES STH TO NTH – SANDY CREEK FALLS

July 18

It was originally intended to walk from the northern end at Sandy Creek inlet but a recce walk a couple of days earlier exposed a very solid climb in the middle so on the day nine people were very relieved to do the walk in the opposite direction.

It was cool and misty as we set out along Harpers track and the 4WD track down to the falls. A fairly steep drop took us to a rockoutcrop at the falls where you could hear but not see the falls. But many thanks to Jean and her knowledge of the area in finding the track??? down to the bottom where you could look straight up the falls.

From the falls it was pretty straightforward bushbashing and compass work with a bit of climbing to find the ridgetop track. After an early lunch we enjoyed easy walking along the ridge until we arrived at the steep section where the wisdom of going from south to north was fully appreciated. All along the ridge and especially in this section trail bikes have created deep ruts in the granitic sand which will scour badly if we ever get good rains so Gary was busy at the back throwing branches and logs into the ruts in an attempt to contain the damage.

A couple more kilometres of easy walking down the ridge to the creek brought us out to the car and after picking up the car shuffle we enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea provided by Doug and Laurice before heading home after a very enjoyable walk.
