The Boroughcoutas is an adult swimming club affiliated with "AUSSI Masters Swimming", a national body which has been established for many years to cater for swimmers over 20 years.
The club was founded in 1991. It was originally formed by a group of interested adults and the leadership of Barry Eastoe. Barry had been a member of the Powerpoints Masters Swimming club in Melbourne for many years before moving to Point Lonsdale. In 1987 he achieved the feat of swimming across the rip from Point Lonsdale to Point Nepean. The name Boroughcoutas was originally derived from two local sources. The Queenscliff football club know as the Barracoutas and the spelling of the name came from the "Borough of Queeenscliff" of which all the founding members were residents. Our membership ages range from 21 to mid 70's and currently stands at 30 members. We adopt the AUSSI Master charter of swimming for fun and fitness. Some members regularly compete in the Aussi Victorian long and short course meets, held in Melbourne in March and August and such swims as the Lorne Pier to Pub, Point Lonsdale Rip View Classic, Portsea Classic and Anglesea Open Water Swim, as well as our own Queenscliff Blue Water Challenge.
Open water swimming has always been part of the club activities with many members regularly swimming between the piers at Queenscliff over the summer months. Late in 1992 we decided that we could run our own open water event and the inaugural Queenscliff Bluewater Challenge was held in January 1993. The event has been run every year since. Club members are required to be affiliated with AUSSI Masters.
