For some years now the City of Bayside, in Victoria, Australia has had an extremely successful sister city relationship with the Borough of King's Lynn and West Norfolk in the UK.  The programme has now been extended to include:

  • The Town of Beaumaris, situated on the Isle of Anglesey in Wales, United Kingdom;

  • The City of Palavas-les-Flots in France, a town situated on the Mediterranean, south of Montpellier;

  • Cixi City in Zhejiang Province, China; and

  • The Nazareth Area Council of Governments and the Nazareth Area Chamber of Commerce, Pennsylvania, USA.

Since 18 July 1992, the City of Bayside has had a well established sister city relationship with the Borough of King's Lynn & West Norfolk in the UK.  In order to develop this link, the Council established the Bayside-King's Lynn and West Norfolk Friendship Association Inc. comprising representatives from many organisations that have contacts within this English borough.

In order to recognise the broader backgrounds of people in Bayside and create greater interest in the community, the Council approved the formation of the Bayside Sister Cities Association whose objective is to create a network of communities around the world committed to co-operation, friendship, continuing communication and joint activities, designed to improve the quality of life for all.

Beaumaris

The sister city link between the City of Bayside and the Town Council of Beaumaris, Wales was established on 14 May 2001. This handsome Isle of Anglesey resort and sailing centre stands at the eastern approach to the Menai Strait. It is the beau marais ('fair marsh') chosen by King Edward I in the 13th century as the location for one of his great castles (now a World Heritage listed site). Although never completed to its full height, the castle's clever concentric defences make it, in pure architectural terms, the most sophisticated of Edward's fortresses.

The town is full of history. Ancient buildings line its main street, and the 17th century Courthouse and chilling Victorian gaol are open to visitors. The Museum of Childhood, with its toys and games spanning 150 years, has a lighter mood. Other attractions here include a display of marine life and a Victorian pier. The town hosts a popular annual festival in early summer.

Palavas-les-Flots

The sister city link with the City of Bayside was established on 14 May 2001. Flanked on one side by the Camargue wetlands and on the other by the vineyards of Languedoc-Roussillon, Palavas-les-Flots is an ancient fishing village and lively seaside resort located on the Mediterranean, 25 km from Montpellier.

Sporting activities including sailing, canal jousting, canoeing, kayaking, sailboarding, waterskiing, jetskiing, nature walks, birdwatching, petanque, football, horse-riding and speleology. For a spot of culture visit the Dubout cartoon museum, take a ferry ride round the canal and port, then indulge your taste buds in one of the many restaurants with regional dishes based on seafoods, oysters and local wines.

Cixi City

The sister city link with the City of Bayside was established on 10 February 2003. Cixi is where construction has begun on the world's longest bridge, across Hangzhou Bay. The bridge will be 40.01 km long connecting Cixi to Shanghai, the New York of China. The Hangzhou Bay Bridge is a major infrastructural development aimed for completion in 2006.

Nazareth Area of Governments and the Nazareth Area Chamber of Commerce

The sister city link with the City of Bayside was established on 10 February 2003. Known as the Barony of the Rose, Nazareth is a small community hidden in the Blue Mountains of eastern Pennsylvania, U.S.A. and is made up of 7 municipalities. Founded in 1740, it is home to both the World's famous Martin Guitar Company and Andretti racing family, and encompasses some of the most picturesque countryside in Pennsylvania. Only 90 miles from New York City and 60 miles from Philadelphia, Nazareth has a rich heritage to please every visitor.
