July 31- 1858- A Game of Football was played between Wills and friends in the Richmond paddock.
Aug 7, 1858- First game played Scotch College v Melbourne Grammer Wills umpired.
After four or five seasons boundaries were marked with flags and teams began to wear distinctive colours.
1887- First game played outside Victoria Carlton defeated Sydney club Waratah, six nil
1879- Football was allowed on M.C.G ,also the first night match was played Melbourne against Carlton.
1883- Laws of the Australian Game of Football where adopted.
1858-1891- The creation of football began and certain decisions where made to decide the structor of the game. 1887-20 players where agreeded for each side more where allowed if agreed.
Melbourne 1858- Geelong 1859 These where the first two sides which where established.
Melbourne- 1859-Tom wills was Captain of Melbourne which won the first Victorian Championship 1870 1872 and 1876
1889- Melbourne was Last on the vfa list.
At this time Fred McGinis was one of the games all time greats.
1889- May 17th the V.F.L. was introduced the Victorian Football League which consisted of eight teams which broke away from the V.F.A Victorian Football Association. The breakaway started the previous year which included representatives of six clubs Colling wood, Essendon, Fitzoy, Geelong, Melbourne, and South Melbourne. Carlton and St Kilda were also invited to join their ranks.
1893- There was a record crowd with the game between Melbourne and Essendon 28,000 Geelong- Won there second sucessive premership. In 1878-79 Geelong were not defeated for 17 games. In 11 seasons Geelong won sevens premerships and were runners up three times and third in the other. Hattricks 1878-79-80 and 1882-83-84
Charles Brownlow,was a player but also later on his name gave great significe towards the game as having the Brownlow Medal ( Medal at the end of the year for the best player on field for that year) named after him. Before this in 1897 this Medal was known as Champion of the colony and then changed in 1902 to Champion of the season and in 1924 was changed to The Brownlow Medal which still stands today.
1864- Carlton was formed. 1871-Carlton won the Challenge Cup in this year and in 73 . In 1871 Carl-ton only lost one game for the year which they won the Cup.
1873- St Kilda was formed.
1873- Essendon was also formed.
1874- South Melbourne was formed.
1875-76 - The Essendon Jumpers introduced in which where black with a red stripe.
1884- Fitzoy was formed and the only team to beat Essendon in 1892.
Mid 1880's -Something evoled in the experimentation and bravery of handful of players which,in turn, was permittedby rule changes and developments in kicking techniques.
1886- Grand Final played in Sydney at the South Melbourne Cricket Ground against Geelong record crowd 30,000-40,000.
1889- Collingwood was formed.
1891- Essendon won there first premership and only lost only one game that year.
1892-Albert Thurgood was the first player to kick a half centeny he kicked 56 goals in his first season.
1892- Won the flag this year and also again in 1893 that year they crusied through with out a loss Captain at the time was Alick Dick.
1892-Collingwood debut in the VFL.
1894- Essendon won there forth flag in a row this year. In 66 matches Essendon was only defeated three times.
1896- Oct3rd new rules including crossbar on goals, abolition of behinds and no marks under ten yards. Throw- ins to be from ten yards either side of the goals were introduced.
1897- South Melbourne joined the VFL
1906- Eight teams in were in the V.F.L. Carton, Fitzoy, collingwood, Essendon, South.Melbourne, St.kilda,geelong,Melbourne.
1908-Richmond and University joined the VFL.
1915- The War at the time effected most teams but the University was the first to feel the impact of war, many of there students were members of the University Regiment so they did not have enough players to make up a team. They had to drop out of the V.F.L.
1926- Three more teams have joined the VFL- Hawthorn,Footscray,North Melbourne,there are now twelve teams in the VFL at this point of time.
1927-28-29-30 Colling wood wins four premerships in a row a all time record.
1936- Bob Pritt kicks 500th goal Gordon Conventy- 1200th goal most goals kicked ever in the history.
1946- Record crowd 68,000 april,22 Easter split round and Saturdays 78,000 - a record one round attendence- 146,000.
1955- 15 yard penalty was introduced against offending players this stops players holding the man. 1962- V.F.L- replays were permited on Saturday nights. 1966- Umpires are instructed to cut ball ups penalise the flick pass and give frees when scrimmages delop. 1976- Two umpires are used for the first time. 1979- V.F.L. match played in March For the first time. 1980- The match of the day was broadcasted for the first time.
1987- Brisbane Bears and West Coast Eagles join the V.F.L
1988- May 11- The V.F.L.introduced the 50 metre penality
1989- The V.F.L have been encouraging Victorian Clubs to merge. 1990- The V.F.L. Victorian Football League is changed to the AFL Australian Football League.
1991- Michael Tuck retiers playing 426 games the most games played by a footballer ever.
1991- Adelaide Crows join the A.F.L.
1993- A.F.L. approves logos back team jumpers.
1994- Feb 9 - In addition to the final eight, the A.F.L. reduces the length of the quarters to 20 minutes plus time added on for stoppages.
1995- Fremantle Dockers join the A.F.L
Ted Whitten (Mr Football) dies August 17, 1995. played 51-70 League record 321 games (Footscray)
1996- Fitzoy played there last year of football (wooden spoon)
1997- Fitzoy mearged with Brisbane Bears and became Brisbane Lions.
1997- Justin Charles was the first player ever in the history of football to admit to using a performance inhancing drug and was suspending for sixteen matches.
1998- Brisbane Lions last on latter (wooden spoon)
1998- North Melbourne was defeated by Adelaide Crows.
